Waltz for Debby

1987 Fantasy, Inc. OJCCD-210-2 (RLP-9399)
This is the second of two Riverside albums made up of selections recorded by the classic Evans/LaFara/Motion trio at their legendary live recording session of June 25, 1961. The first album was the classic Sunday at the Village Vanguard; material for it was selected to feature bassist Scott LaFaro who had died in an auto accident just ten days after recording. This second collection presents a more typical overview of the group.

After Scott LaFaro's tragic death, Evans avoided the studio for some time. He returned in May and June of 1962 to record this album of ballads with Chuck Israels and Paul Motion.

Excellent collection of earliest Bill Evans period.

The Ivory Hunters

1994 Capitol Records, Inc. CDP 7243 8 27324 2 6
Tacky and politically incorrect album cover notwithstanding, this release is an interesting duo-piano outing. Originally booked as a quartet gig with Brookmeyer on trombone, the producer decided at the last minute to feature Brookmeyer playing piano. Recorded March 12, 1959.

A brilliant "experimental" album featuring elaborate and rhythmically complex compositions by jazz academician George Russell performed by an large ensemble, and featuring Bill Evans on piano and Fender Rhodes. Consecration box set, 8 CDs

1997 Alfa Music, Inc. (Tokyo) ALCB 3918-3925
Eight consecutive nights of performances at the Keystone Korner in San Francisco are captured on this well recorded set. The dates (August 31 through September 7, 1980) cover the period two weeks prior to Evans' death. Anyone who doubts the pianist's statement that his last trio was his best and most exciting need only listen to this set for proof. The Wednesday session in particular is fantastic, perhaps the best example of jazz piano trio ever recorded.
